RFID In Brief
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) can be defined as a technology used in applications that identify or track objects using radio waves to communicate information stored. It normally comes in the form of tags and smart cards.
RFID Tags
Most RFID tags contain at least two parts. One is an integrated circuit for storing and processing information, modulating and demodulating a (RF) signal, and other specialized functions. In plain, it is where the information (ID) is stored. The second is an antenna for receiving and transmitting the signal or data to a reader. A technology called chipless RFID allows for discrete identification of tags without an integrated circuit, thereby allowing tags to be printed directly onto assets at a lower cost than traditional tags.
It is a simple, low-cost and disposable and are being used to identify animals, track goods logically and replace printed bar codes at retailers.
How Does It Works?
The RFID tags has 3 types to begin with--Passive, Semi-Passive and Active. As for the Passive RFID type, when the tags come winthin range of the RF reader, the tag will then powered by the reader's RF field and transmit its ID to the reader. There is little to no security on the RFID tag or during communication with the reader. Any RFID readers using appropriate RF signal can get the RFID tag to communicate its contents.
As for the Semi-Passive and Active RFID type, both required power source which usually a small battery embedded inside the RFID tag.
Typical RFID tags can be easily read from distance of several inches to meters. RFID tags have common characteristics, including:
